Bessie Noll was presented with the Young Researcher Award at the International Transport Forum’s annual summit earlier this month for her contributions to sustainable transport.
Bessie was born and raised in Japan, working as a Senior Researcher and Lecturer at a university in Switzerland.
The event had transport ministers in attendance and honoured work published by early-career researchers under the age of 35.
The jury noted that through examining submissions from around the world, materials produced contained both methodological strength and relevance for policymaking.
Noll was recognised for her research on low-carbon passenger transport in Africa and was commended on her contribution to policy development for sustainable transport solutions.
Her work contributes to a growing body of research comparing how different vehicle technologies compare in terms of environmental performance and affordability in an African context.
Noll’s work showed that battery-electric vehicles, based on solar-powered off-grid solutions, can become competitive with mainstream vehicle models before 2040.
