On the eve of America’s Independence Day holidays, a divisive piece of legislation received a ringing endorsement from US truckers.

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) commended the US House of Representatives for voting to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which will now be signed into law by President Trump.

The contentious budget reconciliation bill was narrowly passed by the House of Representatives on 3 July, 218 votes to 214.

The ATA said the proposed legislation will support the trucking industry by “providing long-term tax certainty and more flexible resources for workforce development, ensuring that our nation’s supply chains can keep America’s economy moving”.

“The American Trucking Associations thanks Republicans in Congress and President Trump for moving this comprehensive tax reform package across the finish line,” said ATA President & CEO Chris Spear.

“Today’s vote provides much-needed certainty for the trucking industry – the backbone of our economy – to grow and thrive.

“By passing this bill, Congress averted the largest tax increase in our nation’s history. “Neither the economy nor our supply chain would have survived such a travesty.

“Motor carriers, the overwhelming majority of which are small businesses that operate ten trucks or fewer, will now have the ability to plan for the future, continue to provide good-paying jobs, and upgrade equipment.

“We commend congressional leaders for recognising this fact and crafting this tax relief package that supports the 8.5 million Americans who work throughout trucking.”

The ATA has found more cause to celebrate in the lead up to the Independence Day weekend.

What it called as “ruinous”, the California electric vehicle mandate was recently revoked by President Donald Trump.

The ATA described the revocation as a “major step forward for setting realistic and achievable national emissions standards.”

“Today, common sense prevailed. We thank President Trump, EPA Administrator Zeldin, and congressional leadership for taking decisive action to end crippling, detached-from-reality rule makings that would have imposed devastating economic consequences on American businesses and families,” said ATA President and CEO, Chris Spear.

“This is not the United States of California. With the stroke of his pen, President Trump is restoring the certainty that the trucking industry needs to deliver for our nation as we continue to reduce our environmental impact.”

The resolutions, passed by Congress under the Congressional Review Act and signed today by President Trump, will roll back federal waivers granted to California under the Biden administration regarding emissions and electrification mandates.

This news comes as the US trucking and logistics industry struggles under tariffs affecting the region, with global logistics provider, Maersk describing Canada’s ground freight market as being “fluid as tariff changes and seasonal shifts continue to affect both cross-border and domestic markets”.
