This year will see industry heavyweights – the TIP Group and DSV – collaborate to refurbish 500 Schmitz Huckepack trailers in DSV’s fleet.
The refurbishment will extend the trailers’ lifespan, ensuring they continue operating on DSV’s European routes.
Opting for refurbishment, rather than replacement reflects the companies’ shared vision of actively promoting circular economy initiatives that will help reduce carbon emissions and optimise logistics operations across Europe.
This year’s initiative follows previous collaborations between TIP and DSV, where they successfully refurbished 1,100 trailers in 2023 and 991 trailers in 2024.
The success of the previous efforts in reducing emissions and improving fleet efficiency set the stage for the parties to implement the 2025 refurbishment program, with DSV and TIP agreeing to further strengthen their workshop cooperation across Europe.
The companies have found that refurbishing trailers, instead of replacing them, provides significant emission reductions, showcasing the environmental benefits of extending the life of a refurbished trailer.
The difference in emissions between a refurbished trailer and a new one has resulted in emissions savings of an estimated 8,000 tonnes of CO2 for the 500 trailers, over an extended use period.
Based on the TIP Group’s calculations, refurbishment of a used curtain-sider emits an estimated 2.7 tonnes of CO2. This includes both materials, energy and heating used for the refurbishment.
Both companies have also seen that refurbishment of trailers has led to a doubling of the trailers’ operational lifespan.
DSV has found that after five years of active usage, the trailers will run for six more years in its fleet.
This reduces the need for investment in new trailers, while providing DSV with added long-term value for its fleet.
The parties have noted that the enhanced maintenance programs maximise fleet productivity by minimising downtime of the trailers, while guaranteeing peak trailer performance.
Commenting on the partnership, TIP Group Deputy CEO, Arjen Kraaij said: “We are proud to add a new chapter to our longstanding collaboration with DSV.
“Both companies advocate for circular economy initiatives that contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.
“Refurbishment is a great example, both supporting DSV’s sustainability ambitions and optimising their fleet performance, a true win-win.”
DSV Global Equipment Services Managing Director, Flemming Steiness said: “At DSV, we work hard to reduce our environmental impact with both innovative and practical solutions.
“Refurbishing trailers instead of replacing them is a simple yet powerful way to cut emissions while maintaining the high-quality service our customers expect.
“Circular economy initiatives like this are essential to lowering our overall carbon footprint, and we’re excited to partner with TIP Group to drive real change.”
TIP Group Vice President Sales & Marketing, Rogier Laan added that the parties’ successful long-term relationship was to be celebrated.
“We are very pleased to further enhance our collaboration, offering flexibility to DSV and making use of each other’s workshops across Europe.
Our partnership is built on trust, innovation and making a positive impact.”
