Sweden’s Transport Agency has introduced a much-anticipated regulation to assist the transport sector with longer vehicle combinations.
Effective from 15 April 2025, the Swedish Transport Agency has issued an updated regulation (TSFS 2025:17) providing technical requirements for vehicle combinations longer than 25.25 metres.
The new regulation will permit the maximum length for link combinations to be increased.
Sweden will therefore allow three new types of HCT (High-Capacity Transport) vehicle combinations on Swedish roads, with a total length of up to 34.5 metres.
The newly approved HCT models, longer than 25.25 metres, are the B-double, C-double and Nordic combinations and will allow transport companies to convey more cargo per trip.
The permissible combinations in Sweden are now:
- B-double: tractor + longer link + semi-trailer
- C-double: rigid truck + two central axle trailers
- Nordic: long rigid truck + dolly + semi-trailer
All these combinations, except the C-double, are also permitted in Finland, enabling the design of uniform configurations that comply with both countries’ road regulations.
The new requirements for a B-double are now that the first link trailer may be up to 12 metres long (from coupling point to rear).
With the Nordic combination, the truck must be a maximum of 12 metres plus dolly and a standard semitrailer (max. 13.6 metres), making a total length of approximately 27 metres.
The updated requirements are seen by the Swedish trucking industry as a practical step towards more cost-efficient and climate-smart logistics, with fewer journeys, lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions.
One of the most popular and anticipated approved dimensions is the Nordic combination that enables transport companies to utilise a long rigid truck combined with a dolly and semitrailer.
Finnish trailer manufacturer, Ekeri, a specialist builder of the Nordic combinations, has applauded the decision to update the options for commercial vehicles.
“The biggest change is that the combination of rigid truck plus dolly plus semitrailer is now approved as an HCT configuration, and the truck may be up to 12 metres long,” said Ekeri Sverige AB Managing Director, Fredrik Gripenwarg.
“At Ekeri, we have extensive experience in developing high-capacity, easy-to-manoeuvre HCT solutions. The Nordic combination is our specialty.”
Ekeri’s transport solutions are designed so they combine maximum payload with excellent manoeuvrability and vehicle operation without compromising cargo volume.
