A new special-purpose trailer developed by WIESE Fahrzeugbau in partnership with SAF-Holland is targeting one of forestry transport’s toughest challenges: manoeuvrability on narrow, unpaved tracks.

Designed in collaboration with Austrian forestry operator Johannes Suntinger, the two-axle roll-off tipper combines forced-steering SAF axles with the electro-hydraulic VSE Advanced Steering system. The result is a compact, agile solution aimed at improving access to tight forest environments while maintaining payload efficiency.

Transporting wood chips typically requires high-capacity vehicles capable of navigating confined and uneven terrain. To meet these demands, the developers specified a three-axle truck paired with a two-axle trailer equipped with forced steering – a relatively uncommon configuration compared to standard tri-axle semi-trailers.

At the core of the concept is the VSE Advanced Steering system, which continuously analyses vehicle speed, steering angle and direction of travel, adjusting axle steering inputs in real time. The electro-hydraulic system operates independently, requiring no mechanical connection to the tractor, allowing flexible integration across different trailer designs.

Unlike passive systems, the forced-steering setup enables precise control in both forward and reverse operation. A trailer-mounted hydraulic pump powered via a 24V connection, or optional onboard batteries, drives the system, while programmable controls allow adaptation to various axle configurations and loads of up to 11 tonnes per steered axle.

In forestry applications, the benefits are immediate. Improved agility on tight tracks, reduced tyre wear and lower rolling resistance during cornering. The inclusion of a hook lift system also enables quick container swaps, reducing downtime in the field.

Following around two months of operation and approximately 2,000km on forest tracks, early feedback has been positive.

“Many roads here are extremely narrow and the tight bends are often a real problem,” said Suntinger. “With the two steering axles, the trailer accurately follows the steering motion of the vehicle. We can get through easily, even on narrow forest tracks.”

According to Alexandre Charpiot, Vice-President Sales EMEA at SAF-Holland, the system’s advantages extend beyond forestry.

“We see the SAF steering technology in combination with the VSE Advanced Steering as a true innovation for trailer manufacturers and fleet owners alike,” he said. “The system offers a clear advantage in particular if there is little space for manoeuvring and reversing is part of the standard process—whether on forest tracks, at construction sites or in inner city areas.”
