SSAB is expanding its steel powder production facility in Oxelösund, Sweden, to meet growing demand for additive manufacturing materials and strengthen its position in advanced steel technologies.
The investment will increase production capacity for steel powders used in 3D printing to approximately 350 tonnes per year, with commercial-scale production expected to be gradually ramped up from the first quarter of 2028.
Additive manufacturing is gaining momentum across industries including automotive, engineering, and defence, offering manufacturers the ability to produce stronger, lighter and more complex components while reducing material waste and shortening lead times. The technology is increasingly being adopted for production applications rather than solely for prototyping and spare parts.
For the trailer and transport equipment sectors, additive manufacturing presents opportunities to develop lighter-weight, high-strength components that can contribute to improved payload capacity, durability and production flexibility.
“By increasing SSAB’s manufacturing capabilities, we are strengthening our offering in steel powder for additive manufacturing and making the technology more accessible to our customers,” said SSAB Head of Powder Technology, Jesper Vang.
“We see growing demand for our powder products, which combine high performance with a lower climate impact throughout the value chain.”
SSAB’s steel powders have been specifically developed for additive manufacturing applications and draw on the company’s extensive experience in high-performance steel production.
According to SSAB, the materials enable advanced component designs that combine low weight with high strength, and in some applications can serve as an alternative to aluminium. The powders can also be used without post-production heat treatment, helping to reduce manufacturing costs and lead times.
The expansion project will be delivered in cooperation with SMS group, which will supply the manufacturing technology for the new facility. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with production commencing in early 2028.
At full capacity, the Oxelösund facility is expected to employ around 20 people.
