The International Road Transport Union (IRU) recently met with EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, to review the next wave of road transport policy.
IRU President, Radu Dinescu, and EU Director, Raluca Marian, met with the Commissioner to discuss several major files currently progressing through EU institutions, including decarbonisation measures, workforce initiatives and future infrastructure planning.
With key proposals approaching critical stages, the IRU used the meeting to outline operators’ practical concerns and highlight pressure points in implementation.
Dinescu said the conversation came at “a crucial moment” for the sector.
“With several major transport files now moving forward, it is essential that policies remain workable for operators and enable safe, efficient and sustainable mobility across the EU,” Dinescu said – adding that operators are navigating profound transitions and require regulatory clarity as well as practical, implementable solutions.
Discussion topics ranged from charging infrastructure availability and corporate fleet transitions to Europe’s widening driver shortage and the need to urgently modernise the Driver Training Directive. The IRU also emphasised the sector’s importance in military mobility planning.
Marian said Commissioner Tzitzikostas has demonstrated a strong grasp of operational realities early in his tenure, particularly around decarbonisation challenges and the chronic driver shortage.
“This gives us confidence,” said Marian.
“We look forward to working closely with him and his team to build a stronger, more competitive and resilient EU road transport sector, anchored in real operational needs.”
