Swiss transport company, Schöni Transport, has partnered with Germany’s Trailer Dynamics to premiere its new E-Trailer in Switzerland.
The E-Trailer is an innovative electrified trailer technology from Trailer Dynamics and is designed to sustainably transform road freight transport.
Following extensive field tests in Finland and Norway, the electric semi-trailer is now being used in Switzerland for the first time.
The initial pilot route will operate as a daily round trip between Rothrist in Switzerland and the Milan, Italy area. It will take place within the context of real international scheduled services.
Schöni Transport said the e-trailer used features a powerful electric drive axle that actively assists the tractor unit. This results in significant ecological and economic advantages, which have already been confirmed in practical tests and simulations.
The transport company is expecting a range of benefits to come from the trial, including:
- Range increase for electric semi-trucks by up to 100 per cent (doubling).
- Reduction of diesel consumption by an average of 40 per cent for conventional diesel trucks.
- Significantly lower CO₂ emissions: on average around 40 per cent tank-to-wheel.
- Compatible with any diesel and electric tractor unit, without modifications to the tractor unit.
- DC charging capacity up to 350 kW for a fast and flexible energy supply.
The company said in international transport, the combination of tractor unit and e-trailer opens up new possibilities to effectively combine economic efficiency and sustainability.
The pilot operation on the Rothrist-Milan area route allows the e-trailer to be used under realistic conditions, where detailed performance and consumption data will be collected to evaluate the actual savings and range potential under different load, traffic, and topographical conditions.
The insights gained are directly incorporated into the further development of the technology and into the assessment of a possible rollout.
“With the launch of the Swiss pilot project, we are sending a clear signal: We are not just testing new technologies, we are already thinking about the next steps,” said Schöni Transport owner, Daniel Schöni.
With this project, Schöni Transport once again underscores its pioneering role in sustainability, he said.
Following the motto “on the way to zero,” it simultaneously demonstrates its commitment to bringing innovative technologies into real-world operation at an early stage, thereby actively driving sustainable development in freight transport.
