Logistics provider, CLdN, will boost its cargo handling capabilities with a major investment plan for its Killingholme terminal near Hull.
The terminal’s enhanced cargo handling capabilities will cater for projected volume growth on CLdN’s North Sea connections between Killingholme and the company’s terminals in Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.
The multi-million Euro project, on the river Humber, is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.
The company’s Killingholme terminal, covering 100 hectares, is a strategic gateway for CLdN’s freight services between the UK and continental Europe. It features six deep-sea RoRo berths, from which CLdN offers 12 return sailings a week between Killingholme and its terminals in Zeebrugge and Rotterdam.
The upgrade project will include a reconfiguration of the cargo handling operations to optimise the flow of freight through the terminal. This will ensure an increase in handling and storage capacity for all cargo types – trailers, containers, tank containers and refrigerated units.
CLdN has also invested in five electric rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes to replace part of its existing fleet of diesel-powered reach stacker vehicles. This move will improve operational efficiency, while enabling the terminal to reduce its carbon footprint by between 5-10 per cent.
“This investment is another signal of CLdN’s commitment to the development of its port infrastructure in the UK,” said CLdN CEO, Florent Maes.
“Our combination of shipping services and own port infrastructure is unique in the European short-sea sector and enables us to provide an unmatched range of services to our customers.
“Killingholme is an important hub connecting the North of England with mainland Europe and our ambition is to further grow this corridor in the coming years. The investment also demonstrates our drive to further decarbonise our port operations.”
The Killingholme terminal investment will complement CLdN’s other major investments recently completed at its UK port infrastructure, including a new access to its port in London and a renovation and capacity expansion of its Liverpool terminal.
