CEVA Logistics has implemented a transformative waste management project across its facilities in France as part of its dedication to sustainable logistics solutions and practices.
The large-scale waste management project, started in 2024, operated in partnership with the Particule consultancy firm, is aligned with CEVA’s CSR philosophy of Acting for People, Acting for Planet and Acting for Fair Trade.
As a result, it has transformed CEVA’s approach to waste management and circular economy in France, achieving remarkable environmental and economic benefits.
CEVA sees the project as setting new standards for sustainability in the logistics sector, as it embarks on its goal of decarbonising operations by 2050.
The project required a comprehensive overhaul of CEVA’s waste management strategy and combined centralised contract management with new technologies, with the primary four-fold objectives being:
- Establishing effective monitoring of waste production and recycling metrics across all sites.
- Optimising costs through enhanced recycling practices and reduction in the number of waste collections.
- Minimising environmental impact by resource preservation and reduction of GHG emissions.
- Ensuring full regulatory compliance.
By the end of 2024, the project delivered remarkable results across all French facilities, including:
- Increasing recycling activities from 81 per cent to 87 per cent.
- Threefold reduction in landfall rates.
- Reduction of overall waste tonnage by 10 per cent.
- Reduction of waste related costs by 50 per cent.
At the heart of the project has been the implementation of ‘WastePilot’, an advanced software solution that streamlines CEVA’s entire waste management process.
The project’s implementation phase began with a thorough audit and assessment of CEVA’s 110 facilities across France.
An initial audit examined the different types of waste, quantities and existing waste management and recycling contracts. CEVA’s central QHSE team and Particule also conducted rigorous staff training programs and established continuous improvement protocols for ongoing optimisation.
A feature of the project’s initial phase has been the installation of cardboard baling presses at three facilities, decreasing cardboard and plastic waste volumes. The presses also help to reduce human sorting errors, as well as a 15-fold reduction in transport requirements for removing waste from the facilities.
The project’s next phases will cover cigarette waste management solutions; test composting systems for food waste management; enhanced sorting protocols for pallet straps and glassine label backings; improved office waste recycling systems; implementing equipment exchange application; assist CEVA customers with donating broken or out-of-service products to local associations; and sending CEVA’s recyclable materials directly to manufacturers for use as raw materials.
Today CEVA Logistics, headquartered in Marseille, France, has a global workforce of more than 110,000 people across 1,500 sites and more than 170 countries. It started out as a small Australian trucking company in 1946, Thomas Nationwide Transport (TNT), before transforming into CEVA Logistics in 2006.
Last year, CEVA Logistics expanded in Spain.
