Wabash finalist for SSAB award

US Trailer builder, Wabash National, has been announced as one of four finalists for the SSAB Swedish Steel Prize 2017.

According to SSAB, the finalists were chosen for their “truly innovative design concepts pushing utilisation of high-strength steels”.

“This year a record number of 102 applications were sent in from 32 different countries around the world,” said Eva Petursson, Chairman of the Swedish Steel Prize jury and head of SSAB’s strategic R&D.

“The high overall quality of the applications shows that this prize has an important role in promoting and even encouraging the industry to find new and innovative ways to use high-strength steels for higher performance.”

Wabash National is being recognised for its RIG-16 rear impact guard, released in February 2016, which it says provides superior performance in rear underride collisions.

“When innovative design meets groundbreaking material technology, we can really stretch the limits of product performance,” said Dick Giromini, chief executive officer. “We’re honored to be recognized for our innovation and industry leadership with this award nomination for our patented RIG-16 rear impact guard.”

The other nominees for the award are South African company, Fermel, Italian crane company JMG Cranes and Swedish rail wagon manufacturer, Kiruna Wagon.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Stockholm on May 11.
