SAF-Holland launches disc brake for North America

SAF-Holland has introduced a new air disc brake range for the North American market.

Trading under P89 label, the new series was designed “with the commercial fleet in mind”, according to the US-German transport equipment powerhouse, and includes a standard model  as well as a ‘Plus’ version.

“The base model is a versatile design that can be highly customised to suit specific fleet demands,” the company said – pointing out it has leveraged its global supplier network to create economies of scale and drive down the cost of technology.

“We are [now] able to pass these cost savings to our North American fleet customers and for the first time put air disc brake technology within reach of fleets large and small,” said Jeff Talaga, Vice President of Sales & Strategic Development, Americas at SAF-Holland.

The P89 Plus, meanwhile, will be marketed as a “premium package” and includes a seven-year maintenance-free bearing system and premium rotors to provide a “significant reduction in the Total Cost of Ownership”.

At the heart of both versions are SAF-Holland’s SBS 2220 calliper and a 430mm diameter, heavy-duty vented rotor, according to the company.

“The dual piston SBS 2220 caliper applies a more even pressure pattern across the brake lining than competitive single piston designs,” it said in a media release.

“The 430mm diameter x 45mm thick rotor provides 30 per cent more wear volume than competitive designs.”

The P89 comes standard with a 3.5-inch diameter parallel spindle, but can reportedly also be optioned with lightweight taper spindle configuration, which reduces weight by 10 pounds (ca. 4.5kg) per axle and uses industry standard bearings and wheel seals to reduce maintenance costs.

The P89 is available on the SAF CBX air ride and ULX spring ride suspensions.
