US order activity healthy

US trailer net orders rose an impressive 26 per cent in March, according to ACT Research, making for a 3.5 per cent rise year-on-year.

“Large fleets continue to drive the market, and low cancellations show that orders are firm,” said Frank Maly, Director, CV Transportation Analysis and Research at ACT.

“Trailer production was up four per cent year-over-year,” he added.

“The industry continues to see a rebound in factory inventory after a strong year-end drawdown – inventory was up 13 per cent month-on-month and eight per cent year-on-year.”

Maly confirmed that comments regarding pressure at the dealer level continue to be heard, but explained that normal seasonal patterns indicate some further inventory gains in March.
