US trailer order activity promising

Trailer net orders in the US may have been off one per cent month-over-month in June (22,000 units), but from a year-over-year perspective, they saw a very healthy 42 per cent increase, according to ACT Research.

“Year-to-date net orders of 156k [units] are up 45 per cent over the same period last year,” said Frank Maly, Director – CV Transportation Analysis and Research at ACT.

“Strength in June came from specialty trailers, with platforms posting a 42 per cent m/m gain while liquid and bulk tanks both surged over 75 per cent from May levels.

“The industry is also enjoying low cancellations, driven by firm fleet investment commitments,” he added.

Maly noted that inventory rose six per cent month-over-month, as tight capacity at the fleets continues to interfere with pick-up of new equipment, although he added that some progress is expected in upcoming months.
