Utility presents new side skirt

From the September 2011 issue.

Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co., North America's oldest privately owned, family-operated trailer manufacturer, has introduced the USS-120A side skirt, which it says is capable of contributing a minimum of five per cent in fuel savings.

When used with low rolling resistance tyres on dry vans, Utility says the new side skirt meets California Air Resources Board compliance for operating in California. As a result, it is SmartWay-verified as an “advanced side skirt”. SmartWay is an Environmental Protection Agency program that helps reduce transportation-related emissions through creating incentives to improve supply chain fuel efficiency.

The USS-120A incorporates a fibre-reinforced plastic cover over Utility’s 5-hole pattern design on the wingplate, Utility said. The covered wingplate holes lengthen the side skirt up to 60cm, increasing the device’s aerodynamic efficiency. In addition, the rear edge of the skirt at the support leg assembly is connected by a “slip joint” to ease impact damage.

The new side skirt is made with galvanized high tensile steel braces that allow it to flex inward and outward, similar to Utility’s previous two side skirt designs, USS-120 and USS-160.
